Mets hold off Marlins
Jul 30, 2013 - 5:51 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ike Davis' go-ahead RBI double highlighted a three-run seventh and helped the New York Mets down the Miami Marlins, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game set.Daniel Murphy tallied two hits, three RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Mets, who snapped a three-game losing skid.
David Aardsma (2-0) recorded the final two outs in the sixth to pick up the win and Bobby Parnell worked a scoreless ninth to notch his 21st save of the year.
Ed Lucas had an RBI triple and scored twice for Miami, which had won five of its previous seven.
After the Marlins took a 5-3 lead following a two-run sixth, New York countered with its three-run seventh.
Eric Young belted a one-out double against Mike Dunn and came home when Murphy followed with a looping single into center. A.J. Ramos (3-4) replaced Dunn on the mound and got David Wright to fly out. Murphy stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored when Marlon Byrd singled to center. Davis came up next and laced a double to right to plate a hustling Byrd and give the Mets a 6-5 advantage.
"I'm seeing the ball well," said Davis. "I was just looking for something out over the dish to hit hard somewhere."
Greg Dobbs had a one-out single in the ninth and pinch-runner Juan Pierre stole second before taking third on defensive indifference, but Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to second to end the game.
"At the end of the day we brought our best hitter to the plate in the ninth and gave ourselves a chance," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "We were one big hit away from winning it and one hit away from playing extra innings."
New York jumped out to a 3-0 spread following a three-run third. Murphy snuck a two-out, two-run single through the hole on the left side and Wright followed with an RBI double, but the Marlins answered with three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
Stanton led off the fourth with a double and scored two batters later when Lucas belted a triple over the head of Juan Lagares in center. With two outs and the bases loaded, Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner bounced a ball to short, but Omar Quintanilla bobbled the grounder, allowing two runners to score.
Jeff Mathis ripped a one-out, two run single in the sixth to give Miami a 5-3 margin.
Game Notes
Turner allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over 6 1/3 innings, while New York starter Jeremy Hefner surrendered five runs -- three earned -- on four hits and five walks over 5 1/3 frames ... New York was 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
