Angels hope to stop slide against Devil Rays
Jul 19, 2007 - 1:26 PM La Angels (55-38) at Tampa Bay (37-56) 12:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim look to snap a three-game losing streak and hold on to their slim division lead when they face the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the finale of a three-game series Thursday.
Kelvim Escobar (10-3, 3.04 ERA) will take the mound for the Angels as they try to maintain their 1 1/2-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West.
Escobar did not recieve a decision in his last start against the Texas Rangers last Friday, surrendering just one run and six hits with a walk and six strikeouts over eight innings in a 2-1 triumph.
With Escobar on the mound, the Angels will be looking to avoid getting swept in the series.
Escobar will be opposed by Andy Sonnanstine (1-4, 5.57), who has not won since June 10.
The Devil Rays are winless the last six times Sonnanstine has taken the mound.
The 24-year-old rookie pitched five innings, yielding five runs and nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts in a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday.
Tampa Bay is looking for its first three-game winning streak since June 9-12.
