Vazquez takes center stage as White Sox meet Red Sox
Jul 19, 2007 - 1:35 PM Chi White Sox (42-51) at Boston (56-38) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - With Mark Buehrle now locked into a long-term deal, the Chicago White Sox are likely to trade one of their other high-priced starting pitchers.
Javier Vazquez will take his turn in front of opposing scouts on Thursday when the White Sox visit the Boston Red Sox.
Vazquez (6-5, 3.77 ERA), who signed a three-year extension worth $34.5 million with Chicago in spring training, has a consistent track record and contract stability that will be attractive to a number of clubs as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.
The veteran righthander did not factor in the decision last Saturday at Baltimore, allowing four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. That start snapped a streak of four straight quality outings from Vazquez, during which he compiled a 3-0 record with a 1.69 ERA.
The Red Sox will counter with suddenly-struggling Daisuke Matsuzaka (11-6, 3.94). The Japanese righthander has surrendered 10 runs and 19 hits in his last 11 innings over two starts, going 1-1.
Prior to those two outings, Matsuzaka had reeled off a six start stretch with a 3-2 record and a 1.29 ERA.
He will be trying to get Boston back on track after dropping two straight games to the lowly Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox lost 6-5 on Wednesday, marking their seventh consecutive defeat in one-run games.
The White Sox took two of three from Cleveland to run their record to 3-4 on their current 11-game road trip.
