Indians use big eighth inning to beat White Sox
Jul 31, 2013 - 4:25 AM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Yan Gomes had three RBI and his two-run double capped off a four-run eighth inning that helped the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-4, in the second tilt of a four-game set at Progressive Field.Donnie Veal (1-2) gave up a pair of singles in the eighth before being replaced by Matt Lindstrom. Ryan Raburn hit a two-out, pinch-hit single up the middle to give the Indians a one-run advantage. Following a base hit, Gomes sent a double to the right-center field gap that one hopped off the wall and just like that the Indians had a 7-4 lead.
"I don't think I've seen a bench this productive," said Raburn. "It seems like everyone off the bench has come in and helped."
Following the game, the White Sox shipped pitcher Jake Peavey to the Boston Red Sox in a three-team deal in exchange for J.B. Wendelken and Francelis Montas, both right-handed pitchers, and infielder Cleuluis Rondon.
Additionally, Chicago received outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Detroit Tigers.
Bryan Shaw (2-2) recorded one out in the eighth to earn the win and Chris Perez stranded a runner at third in the ninth to grab his 15th save of the year.
Michael Bourn drove in the other two runs for Cleveland, winners in six straight.
Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Josh Phegley and Dayan Viciedo each drove in a run for the White Sox, who have lost five in a row.
Alejandro De Aza and Alex Rios both singled around a flyout in the first and came around to score on a two-run double to right from Dunn.
The White Sox were right back at it in the second. Gordon Beckham doubled to left and crossed the plate when Phegley drove a base hit up the middle to make it 3-0 Chicago.
Michael Brantley walked and Carlos Santana reached on shortstop Alexei Ramirez's fielding error to begin the fifth. Lonnie Chisenhall singled to load the bases and Gomes drew a four-pitch walk to score Cleveland's first run.
Bourn reached on a force out to second but appeared to step on pitcher Andre Rienzo's foot on the play when he was covering first. While Rienzo was limping in pain Chisenhall crossed the plate to tie the game at 3-3. Asdrubal Cabrera flied out with the bases loaded the end the inning.
"I just tried to help my team and tried to do my job, get a win," said Rienzo. "I hope next time we can do better."
Consecutive singles from Paul Konerko and Dunn to start the sixth chased starter Scott Kazmir from the mound. Matt Albers was able to get Jeff Keppinger to ground into a double play that moved Konerko to third but Viciedo's RBI single off second baseman Jason Kipnis' glove broke the tie.
Game Notes
Rienzo allowed three unearned runs on five hits and three walks in seven innings ... Rienzo was the first Brazilian-born player to pitch in the major leagues ... Kazmir surrendered four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts over five-plus innings of work ... Jake Peavy was scratched earlier on Tuesday as the team entertains offers for him ... The Indians have won eight of their first 10 games with the White Sox in 2013.
