Alvarez, Marlins down Mets
Aug 1, 2013 - 5:34 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Henderson Alvarez threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Jake Marisnick hit his first home run of his career as the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets, 3-2, in the third test of a four-game series at Marlins Park.Alvarez (2-1) gave up two runs on six hits and two walks in his outing. The 23-year-old right-hander has allowed just two runs on 14 hits over his last three starts. He also contributed with the bat, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
"(Alvarez) went out there and did exactly what we needed," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "It was fun to watch him."
Placido Polanco and Giancarlo Stanton drove in a run apiece for the Marlins, who have the opportunity to split the series in Thursday's finale.
Ike Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mets, who saw starter Jenrry Mejia (1-1) surrender all three runs on six hits and one walk in six frames.
"He was behind in a lot of counts...and got himself into trouble," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Mejia.
Marisnick's solo shot came with two outs in the second.
In the bottom of the third, Eric Young ripped a two-out triple that bounced off the top of the center-field wall. Umpires reviewed the replay and kept the call. However, after Daniel Murphy walked, David Wright flew out to right.
Miami tacked on two more runs in the third. Alvarez hit an infield single to lead off and Christian Yelich knocked a double to left. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Polanco and Stanton gave them a 3-0 lead.
The Mets got on the board in the sixth. Marlon Byrd reached on a two-out infield single and scored on Davis' double to right.
New York had a chance to rally in the top of the eighth. Young walked to start the inning and advanced to third on a lineout by David Murphy. Alvarez was replaced by Chad Qualls, but Young scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to one.
Wright singled and stole second, but Byrd flew out to center and Miami reliever Mike Dunn got pinch-hitter Josh Satin to fly out to left.
Dunn gave up a leadoff single to John Buck in the ninth, but retired the next three batters to notch his second save.
