Norris faces former mates, as O's wrap set with Astros

Aug 1, 2013 - 2:14 PM (Sports Network) - In his first full day with the Baltimore Orioles, right- hander Bud Norris faces the team that dealt him, as the Houston Astros visit Camden Yards to complete a three-game series.

Norris, a sixth-round draft pick of the Astros in 2006, was sent to Baltimore for L.J. Hoes, John Hader and a 2014 competitive-balance pick in a deal consummated shortly before Wednesday's non-waiver trade deadline.

The 6-foot, 220-pounder debuted with the Astros in 2009 and won six games in 11 appearances, then won nine, six and seven times in three full seasons - which he started 87 games.

He was 6-9 this season through 21 starts, the last of which came July 24 against Oakland, when he gave up three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings of a game the Astros lost, 4-3.

Norris has never pitched a game at Camden Yards.

Starting for Houston will be Jordan Lyles, who's seeking his first win since defeating Milwaukee on June 18. In six starts since, the 22-year-old is 0-3 while allowing four runs or more four times and pitching at least six innings just twice.

He was beaten, 12-5, by Seattle in his first after the All-Star break on July 21, then got a no-decision in Houston's 12-6 loss at Toronto on July 26.

In those two starts, Lyles gave up 14 runs on 17 hits in nine innings.

On Wednesday, Jason Castro highlighted Houston's 15-hit outburst in an 11-0 rout of the Orioles with a grand slam and two doubles. Matt Dominguez went 4- for-5 with a home run and two RBI and Robbie Grossman added a two-run homer for Houston, which had been 0-7 all-time at Camden Yards.

Brett Oberholtzer (1-0) was called upon in anticipation of Houston trading Erik Bedard, but that deal never came to fruition and the rookie pitched flawlessly over seven scoreless frames in his first career start, allowing just three hits while striking out six with no walks.

Miguel Gonzalez (8-5), meanwhile, didn't make it out of the fourth and lost consecutive decisions for the first time in his short career. He was shelled for nine runs -- four earned -- on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings as the Orioles lost for the sixth time in their last eight games.

The Orioles have won nine of 14 games in the all-time series between the teams, including three of the first five this season.
