Angels eye four-game sweep of Blue Jays
Aug 4, 2013 - 2:06 PM (Sports Network) - Looking for a four-game sweep on Sunday will be the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who finish up the weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Big A.Garrett Richards pitched seven strong innings and allowed just two runs to power the Angels to a win in Thursday's series opener.
On Friday, the Angels got in the win column again with a 7-5 victory thanks to some clutch hitting in the eighth inning as J.B. Shuck hit an RBI single and Kole Calhoun blasted a two-run home run.
Jered Weaver got the win for the Angels on Saturday as he pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Howie Kendrick went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the contest while Calhoun homered for the second straight night. The Angels' three-game winning streak comes on the heels of a six-game slide.
Esmil Rogers took the loss for Toronto after allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits in five innings. Brett Lawrie went 1-for-4 with a home run in the contest and Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
The Blue Jays had won back-to-back games before the current skid.
Mark Buehrle will be trying to extend a scoreless innings streak when he starts on Sunday afternoon for the Blue Jays.
After tossing seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win over Oakland his last time out, Buehrle has now gone 16 straight innings without allowing a run. Buehrle pitched a shutout against Houston to start the streak.
With his recent string of success, Buehrle has whittled his ERA down to 4.27, which is the top mark among Blue Jay starters. Buehrle has also dragged his record to the .500 mark as he currently owns seven wins to match seven losses.
Buehrle has not exactly racked up the wins against the Angels in years past. In 20 career appearances, 19 of which were starts, Buehrle is just 2-7 with an ERA of 4.43.
The Angels' wins leader and fellow left-hander C.J. Wilson will be opposing Buehrle in this contest.
Wilson was rolling along with wins in three straight starts and seven of his previous eight overall before he ran into Texas on Tuesday. In that matchup, Wilson departed after just four innings as he allowed a season-high 11 hits, while matching a season high in runs allowed with six.
Despite that difficult outing, Wilson has been pitching well for the Angels this season. At 11-6 he has more wins than any other starter for the Angels and his 3.48 is second only to Weaver among starters.
Wilson has yet to face Toronto this season but in his career he owns a 2-3 record and a 3.52 ERA in 15 total appearances, five of which were starts.
This is the first series between these clubs this season.
