Kazmir, Indians shut out Marlins
Aug 4, 2013 - 9:48 PM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Scott Kazmir tossed six shutout innings in the Cleveland Indians' 2-0 win over the Miami Marlins in the finale of a three- game set.Kazmir (7-4) struck out seven and surrendered just two hits and a pair of walks for the Indians, who tallied their MLB-leading 15th shutout and have won 10 of their last 11 games.
"I thought he was really good, just got tired," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Kazmir. "That was a pretty good effort, though."
Cleveland opens up a critical four-game set against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Yan Gomes had three hits and scored a run, while Chris Perez fired a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 17th save of the season in the triumph.
Nathan Eovaldi (2-2) allowed a run on seven hits and a walk over seven frames for Miami, which dropped the final two games of the set.
"We're not getting a ton of hits, and in a game like this that hurts you," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
The Tribe pushed across their first run in the second.
Gomes' one-out single preceded Mark Reynolds' double to put runners on second and third. Lonnie Chisenhall then slapped a base hit to right to plate Gomes, but Kazmir rolled into a double play to end the frame.
Neither team moved a runner past first from there until the seventh, when Gomes and Reynolds began the inning with back-to-back singles. They stood at second and third, respectively, with one away a bit later, but pinch-hitter Jason Giambi popped out to third baseman Ed Lucas in foul territory and Michael Bourn lined out to right, ending the inning.
The Marlins had runners on first and second with one out in the home half, but Bryan Shaw struck out Jake Marisnick and Jeff Mathis to end the threat.
Cleveland tacked on a run in the eighth. Mike Aviles began the frame with a double against Chad Qualls and scampered to third on Jason Kipnis' sacrifice bunt. Ryan Raburn then struck out, but Michael Brantley's single back up the middle brought home Aviles for a 2-0 spread.
