Tigers try to stretch winning streak to 11 in Cleveland
Aug 7, 2013 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Doug Fister goes for a fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday night when the equally red-hot Detroit Tigers visit Progressive Field for the third game of a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians. The 29-year-old was 6-5 on the season after a 10-6 loss to Boston on June 21, then had three consecutive starts with no-decisions before beating Texas on July 12 with six innings of two-run ball.
He won consecutive games No. 2, 3 and 4 on July 21, July 26 and Aug. 2 while allowing a combined 16 hits and three runs in 22 innings against Kansas City, Philadelphia and the Chicago White Sox.
Fister did not get a verdict in a July 7 meeting with Cleveland after allowing six runs on six hits in six innings of a game the Indians ultimately lost, 9-6.
He's 5-3 in 13 career starts against Cleveland.
For the Indians, Dominican-born right-hander Danny Salazar makes the second start of his brief big-league career.
The 23-year-old debuted on July 11 against Toronto and allowed a single run on two hits in six innings of a 4-2 victory.
Salazar began this season at Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus and combined to go 6-5 in 21 appearances - 20 starts - while posting a 2.71 earned run average in 93 innings.
In 104 minor-league appearances across all levels, he was 26-22 with a 3.10 ERA in 452 2/3 innings.
On Tuesday, Justin Verlander threw eight dominant innings, Don Kelly belted a three-run homer and the Tigers registered their 10th consecutive victory with a 5-1 decision over the Indians.
Verlander (12-8) surrendered four hits -- just one of which came after the second inning -- and struck out seven without a walk in leading Detroit to its first double-digit winning streak since a 12-game tear in September 2011.
Kelly supplied the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and Miguel Cabrera aided the cause with a pair of hits that included an RBI double.
All five Detroit runs came in the fifth inning against Justin Masterson (13-8), who lasted seven frames and allowed seven hits while fanning six.
Michael Bourn had two of Cleveland's four hits as the Tribe failed to bounce back from a tough 4-2 loss in Monday's opener. Tuesday's setback dropped Cleveland five games off Detroit's lead atop the AL Central.
Detroit won nine of the initial 12 games between the teams in 2013, including three of four in a series at Cleveland between July 5 and July 8.
