Mets eye sweep of Rockies at Citi Field
Aug 8, 2013 - 1:58 PM (Sports Network) - Dillon Gee tries to pitch the New York Mets to a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies on Thursday when the two teams complete their set at Citi Field.Gee has been terrific for the Mets of late, especially at home, where he is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA over his last five starts. He pitched well enough to get the win in Flushing on Friday against Kansas City, as he allowed a run and three hits in seven innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 4-2 win.
The 27-year-old righty is 7-8 on the year with a 3.97 ERA.
Gee lost to the Rockies earlier in the year and is 1-1 in two starts against them with a 6.17 ERA.
New York can only hope that Gee delivers the way Matt Harvey did on Wednesday, as the phenom tossed the first shutout of his career in the Mets' 5-0 win.
Wilmer Flores, in his second career game, went 2-for-4 with a three-run double while John Buck and Omar Quintanilla drove in a run apiece for the Mets, who will be trying for their first sweep of the Rockies since July 11-13, 2008, at Shea Stadium.
Harvey, who gave up four hits and struck out six, has allowed three runs or less in all but three of his starts this season.
"Nine innings, it's where you want to go as a starter," said Harvey. "Whether I struck out 10 or three or one, nine innings with a bunch of zeroes is all that matters."
Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin (10-6) gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings.
The Rockies have now lost four in a row and things could get worse, as All- Star Carlos Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list Wednesday and Thursday's scheduled starter, Tyler Chatwood, was scratched due to elbow inflammation .
So with Chatwood out the Rockies will turn to journeyman right-hander Jeff Manship, who is 6-8 with a 4.85 in 24 games (17 starts). This, though, will be his first big league start since 2010 with the Minnesota Twins.
"We obviously didn't have the road trip that we'd like to have," said Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer. "Hopefully we can at least get tomorrow's game and go back home. It's important."
