Rendon and Nats clobber Phils
Aug 10, 2013 - 3:35 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Anthony Rendon smacked a two-run homer and Ryan Zimmerman added a solo shot in the Washington Nationals' 9-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game set.Dan Haren (7-11) fanned seven and surrendered two runs on just four hits over seven frames for Washington, which snapped its four-game slide. Wilson Ramos tallied a pair of hits and runs scored in the triumph.
"I felt really good out there today, really comfortable. The ball was moving pretty good. Then obviously getting all the runs made it pretty easy," Haren said.
John Lannan (3-5) allowed eight runs on nine hits and five walks over five innings for the Phillies, who have lost seven of their last nine tilts.
"He was having trouble with command," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Lannan.
The Nationals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating three in the second and another in the third.
Rendon belted a two-run shot over the wall in right-center before Zimmerman's two-out solo blast three batters later accounted for the runs in the second. Adam LaRoche's RBI double in the third gave Washington its four-run spread.
Chase Utley's RBI single in the fourth got the Phillies on the board, but the Nats erupted for four more runs in the fifth.
Ramos had an RBI double, Haren worked a bases-loaded walk and Denard Span's two-run single increased the Nationals' margin to 8-1.
Cody Asche's RBI groundout in the seventh trimmed the deficit to 8-2, but Bryce Harper's run-scoring base hit in the eighth again increased the advantage to seven.
