Beckett hopes to stop Red Sox slide

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Josh Beckett will take the mound as the Boston Red Sox look to snap a three-game losing streak when they continue a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

With Daisuke Matsuzaka struggling with his control, Boston dropped a 4-2 decision in Thursday's series opener. It was the eighth loss in the last 11 contests for the Red Sox, who saw their division lead over the New York Yankees diminish to seven games.

Beckett (12-3, 3.35 ERA) has lost two of his previous three starts, including a 2-1 setback to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. He allowed two runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings to miss out on being the major league's first 13-game winner.

Over his last six starts, the 27-year-old righthander is 3-3 with a 4.26 ERA after starting the season 9-0.

The White Sox will counter with Jose Contreras (5-11, 5.32), who has lost each of his last four starts.

After starting the season with a 4-4 mark, the 35-year-old has struggled to a 1-7 record with a 6.92 ERA over his last nine starts. Chicago is 6-12 when Contreras starts this season.
