Rockies rely on Manship versus Padres
Aug 13, 2013 - 2:47 PM (Sports Network) - Journeyman right-hander Jeff Manship makes the eighth start of his big-league career on Tuesday night when the Colorado Rockies go for two straight wins against the San Diego Padres in the middle test of a three- game set at Coors Field. The Rockies broke out on top on Monday night, when Jhoulys Chacin pitched eight strong innings and Dexter Fowler drove in four runs in a 14-2 rout.
Wilin Rosario singled in two runs in the opening inning and DJ LeMahieu homered to begin a three-run second, as the Rockies coasted to their fourth consecutive victory, their longest winning streak since a season-best eight- game run, April 12-20.
Chacin (11-6) allowed five hits, including Jaff Decker's first career homer. Rosario had three RBI and LeMahieu went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Nolan Arenado contributed four hits and drove in a run. The opener of this three-game set was delayed 63 minutes by rain entering the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Rockies scored six times in the eighth. Edinson Volquez (8-10) gave up nine hits and eight runs over 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander, who was 5-0 over his past 10 road starts, suffered his first away defeat since April 7 at Coors Field.
The Padres, who had six hits and four errors, lost for the fifth time in six games. Jedd Gyorko also hit a solo homer.
Manship, a 28-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, was drafted in the 14th round by the Minnesota Twins in 2006 and reached the majors with the Twins three years later.
He spent parts of four big-league seasons with them, starting six times in 41 appearances while going 3-2 from 2009 to 2012.
Manship was granted free agency following the 2012 season and was signed by the Rockies on Nov. 17, then began 2013 with 24 appearances for Colorado's Triple- A affiliate at Colorado Springs.
He was 6-8 with a 4.85 earned run average before making his Rockies debut on Aug. 8 and tossing five innings of four-hit, two-run ball in a 2-1 loss to the New York Mets.
In 90 2/3 overall big-league innings, he's allowed 111 hits, 65 runs and 35 walks while striking out 60 batters and allowing an opposition batting average of .307.
San Diego goes with veteran lefty Eric Stults, who's gone 0-3 in four starts since his last win on July 14.
The 33-year-old Indiana native was 8-7 on the season after a 10-1 defeat of the San Francisco Giants, but has since lost to St. Louis, Arizona and Cincinnati while his ERA has ticked upward from 3.40 to 3.50.
He allowed 11 and 10 hits, respectively, in the losses to the Diamondbacks and Reds, but settled down for seven innings of three-run ball against Baltimore in a game Padres lost, 10-3, on Aug. 7.
Stults is 3-0 in 10 career meetings with the Rockies and beat them, 2-1, with a complete-game four-hitter on July 9 in San Diego.
The Rockies won 10 of the first 13 games with the Padres this season, including two of three in San Diego from July 8-10.
