Final/11
De Aza's hit sends ChiSox over Tigers in 11 innings
Aug 14, 2013 - 6:16 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Alejandro De Aza singled home the winning run in the 11th inning as the Chicago White Sox took a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game series.Jeremy Bonderman (2-4) walked Avisail Garcia to start the inning and Jeff Keppinger followed with a bunt. Bonderman went to second after fielding the ball, but his throw pulled Omar Infante off the bag and everyone was safe.
After Jordan Danks grounded out to first, Tyler Flowers walked and Phil Coke entered the game, promptly serving up a pitch to De Aza that he put in right field for the win.
Garcia went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple and two runs scored for the White Sox, who have won three of four.
"These guys are still going out there and competing every night," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura. "You know, we're going against a team like Detroit that has a big league and our guys are still grinding it out. That's the only thing you can do."
Hector Santiago worked five-plus innings in the start and gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits. Addison Reed (5-1) got the win for pitching two scoreless innings.
Infante and Brayan Pena each went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the AL Central leaders, who have lost four of five.
Max Scherzer gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits over six innings in the start for Detroit.
"He was out of synch and his delivery wasn't there for whatever reason," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland about Scherzer. "You know they still weren't able to get hits off of him, but he's had better games."
Detroit worked a run across in the second as Prince Fielder walked to start, moved to second on Victor Martinez's walk, made it to third after Matt Tuiasosopo hit into a double play, and came home on Infante's single.
Chicago, though, went on top in the fourth as Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez reached base to start the inning. After the next two batters struck out, Garcia tripled into the corner in right. Infante's throw to third wasn't handled by Miguel Cabrera and Garcia came home for a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers got one back in the sixth as Martinez led off with a single, which prompted a pitching change as Matt Lindstrom took the mound. Two batters later, Infante singled to right to put runners on the corners and Pena followed with a fielder's choice that saw Martinez cross the plate on Ramirez's throwing error to make it a 3-2 game.
In the eighth with Nate Jones on the mound, Martinez led off with a walk and was replaced on base by Don Kelly, who made it to third when Infante hit a grounder to short that Ramirez was unable to field. Pena then hit a single to right to tie the game.
The Tigers wasted a chance with runners at the corners in the top of the 11th.
Game Notes
Chicago has won just five of the 12 games against Detroit this season ... Detroit was just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base ... Chicago went 2-for-9 with RISP and stranded 11.
