Corporan lifts Astros over A's in extras
Aug 15, 2013 - 6:58 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Carlos Corporan clubbed a go-ahead double in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Houston Astros to a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the second test of a three-game series at O.co Coliseum.Oakland center fielder Chris Young, who pulled a potential game-winning two- run homer just foul in the ninth inning of Tuesday's setback, nearly ended Wednesday's tilt in the 10th when he lifted a towering fly ball to left with two outs.
Houston left fielder Robbie Grossman tracked the ball perfectly to the wall before making a leaping grab to rob Young of a home run and extend the game.
"I'm doing something wrong in life," Young said of his bad luck. "I need to change. I've been hitting some balls hard, and when you hit balls hard, you need to get the results."
Jose Altuve then smacked a one-out single in the 11th and raced all the way home when Corporan doubled off the top of the wall in left-center field to give Houston a 2-1 edge.
Josh Fields worked around a leadoff double in the home half to secure his second save of the season. Lucas Harrell (6-13) spun a perfect 10th to earn the victory, Houston's second in a row.
Brandon Moss plated the lone run of the game for the A's, who lost for the sixth time in their last nine games.
Sean Doolittle (3-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up Corporan's go- ahead double in the 11th.
Starting pitching was the story for much of the night, as Houston's Jared Cosart and Oakland's Jarrod Parker exchanged zeros over the first six frames.
Houston finally broke through against Parker in the seventh when Chris Carter led off the frame with his 22nd homer of the season.
Cosart, meanwhile, was lifted to start the home half and the A's quickly jumped on Philip Humber, as Yoenis Cespedes smacked a leadoff single and scored when Moss followed with a double to tie the game at 1-1.
"He's a young guy, pretty confident, and he has a power arm," Houston manager Bo Porter said of Cosart. "He has all the skill sets to be a front-of-the- rotation starter."
Game Notes
Parker struck out six while giving up one run on eight hits and a walk over 8 1/3 innings. Parker is 6-0 over his last 14 starts and hasn't lost since May 22 at Texas ... Cosart scattered three hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six scoreless frames ... Houston catcher Jason Castro extended his career-long hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the ninth ... Oakland finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
