Phils eye third consecutive win against Rockies
Aug 20, 2013 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies haven't won three in a row in over a month, but will look to change that Tuesday in the second portion of a four- game series versus the Colorado Rockies. The Phillies won three straight from July 13-19 and made it two wins in a row since a four-game slide with Monday's 5-4 win at Citizens Bank Park. John Mayberry Jr. hit a three-run homer during a four-run fourth inning and Carlos Ruiz went deep for the Phillies, who are now 2-2 under interim manager Ryne Sandberg.
Ethan Martin was staked to a 5-0 lead and went on to win with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He struck out six and walked two batters. Jonathan Papelbon was the fourth relief pitcher called on and the closer worked around a hit in the ninth for his 21st save.
"Well pitched game other than a little struggles in the eighth," Sandberg said. "Offensively we came up big in the fourth."
The Phils have won two straight games for the first time since July 14, when they won the last two games before the All-Star break.
Philadelphia is 2-2 on a 10-game homestand and will send youngster Tyler Cloyd to the mound Tuesday. In six starts in the big leagues this season, Cloyd is 2-2 with a 3.41 earned run average and hasn't pitched in the majors since June 12 at Minnesota. Cloyd allowed one run in five innings of a 4-3 loss to the Twins for the no-decision.
Cloyd, who is 5-9 with a 4.89 ERA in 18 starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, faced the Rockies once in his career last Sept. 9 and gave up four runs in four innings of a 7-4 win for the no-decision.
Colorado fell to 22-41 away from Coors Field with Monday's loss and is just 1-8 in its last nine games as the guest. Jeff Manship was banged around for all five runs, including four in the fourth, and lasted five innings.
"I felt good going into the fourth inning ... so it was a little frustrating," Manship said. "I didn't do my job."
Troy Tulowitzki homered, Wilin Rosario drove in two runs and Todd Helton added an RBI for the Rockies, who almost pulled off a comeback with four runs over the seventh and eighth inning. Helton turns 40 on Tuesday and is seven hits shy of 2,500 in his lengthy career.
The Rockies are 1-3 on a 10-game road trip and will hand the ball to Jorge De La Rosa Monday night. De La Rosa is 4-1 in his past five decisions and aims to win his third straight start. He allowed two runs in seven innings of a 4-2 win over San Diego on Wednesday to improve to 12-6 in 25 starts and lower his earned run average to 3.22.
De La Rosa has never beaten the Phillies in his career, going 0-4 with a 7.24 ERA in seven games, five of which have been starts.
Colorado won two of three over the Phillies at home in mid-June, but lost five of its six games played in Philadelphia a season ago.
