Mariners look to continue to inch closer to division lead

Jul 21, 2007 - 1:07 PM Seattle (54-39) at Toronto (46-50) 1:07 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Jeff Weaver goes for his first win in three starts when the Seattle Mariners face the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game series Saturday.

On June 19, the Mariners had just capped a six-game losing streak and fell to third in the American League West, 7 1/2 games back. Since then, they have posted a 19-7 record and closed within one game of the division-leading Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Seattle has been paced by leadoff hitter Ichiro Suzuki, who is batting .352, and closer J.J. Putz, who has 28 saves in as many opportunities.

Weaver (2-7, 6.82 ERA) was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts over five innings in an 11-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers last Sunday.

The Blue Jays will counter with Josh Towers (4-6, 5.40), who gave up a season-high six runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Monday.

Toronto has lost four of its previous five contests.
