Young leads Phils past Rocks with 9th inning surge
Aug 22, 2013 - 3:21 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Michael Young's game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in the third installment of a four-game set.The Phillies trailed 3-2 entering the ninth after Nolan Arenado's RBI single in the eighth put the Rockies ahead.
Erik Kratz doubled to start the ninth against Rafael Betancourt (2-4) and John Mayberry moved pinch-runner Casper Wells to third with a groundout. Pinch- hitter Carlos Ruiz ripped a double to left to plate Wells before Jimmy Rollins was intentionally walked. Young then lined a single down the left-field line to bring home Ruiz for the winning run.
"He's usually right on the corners," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said of Betancourt. "I think he got some balls on the plate tonight and they put the barrel on them."
Chase Utley cracked a solo shot and starter Cliff Lee struck out six and surrendered two runs on nine hits in the no-decision for Philadelphia, which had dropped five of its last seven tilts coming in.
"Cliff overall pitched well with guys on base with the nine hits," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Jake Diekman (1-3) tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to pick up the win.
Wilin Rosario smacked a solo homer for the Rockies, who have dropped four of their last five contests.
Utley ripped a two-out solo shot into the seats in right in the opening frame to get the Phillies on the board, but Colorado countered with a pair of runs in the second.
Rosario led off the inning with a blast to right. A two-out RBI single by Dexter Fowler gave Colorado a 2-1 lead, although left fielder Domonic Brown threw out the trailing runner Jordan Pacheco at the plate.
The Phils tied it in the fifth when Young grounded into a double play with no outs and runners on the corners.
