Final/12
Gillaspie hits HR in 12th, White Sox sweep KC
Aug 23, 2013 - 5:52 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Conor Gillaspie golfed a solo home run off Luke Hochevar in the 12th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, to complete a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium.Jake Petricka (1-0) picked up the win in his major league debut, as he induced an inning ending double-play ball from Salvador Perez to escape the 11th.
Royals relievers did not allow a hit in four innings of work before Gillaspie sent a Hochevar (3-2) curve ball just barely over the wall in right leading off the 12th.
Addison Reed entered in the bottom half and locked down his 34th save of the year and sixth in seven days. Kansas City had the tying run on second base with no outs, but Reed retired pinch-hitter David Lough, Chris Getz and Emilio Bonifacio in succession to secure Chicago's first sweep in Kansas City since 2009.
The White Sox won the final six games of their seven-game road trip and sent the spiraling Royals to their eighth loss in 10 games.
"It would have been nice to kind of get this a month or two ago when we were really scuffling," Gillaspie said. "We're catching a couple of breaks here and there, a couple of balls they're hitting, we're catching. I feel like for a month and half of the season, that was us."
Chicago's Jose Quintana and James Shields each threw seven innings of three- run ball and wound up with no-decisions. Quintana only allowed four hits and struck out seven, while Shields scattered nine hits and fanned eight.
Quintana faced the minimum through four innings before briefly losing his touch in the fifth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for Bonifacio, who singled home Billy Butler with the game's first run.
Sacrifice flies from Alcides Escobar and Jamey Carroll made it a 3-0 game, but the White Sox got two back in the sixth and tied it in the seventh.
After Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo singled in Jordan Danks and Gordon Beckham, respectively, Josh Phegley caught a break when his ground ball down the first-base line hit the bag and bounced into right field, allowing Gillaspie to score the tying run from second.
"Their balls were finding holes. Sometimes it goes that way," Shields said. "It's unfortunate."
