White Sox try to carry momentum into contest with Rangers

Aug 25, 2013 - 11:53 AM (Sports Network) - After a dramatic finish to Saturday night's contest, a three-game series between the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox will be decided on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field.

With the game tied at the bottom of the ninth inning, Josh Phegley delivered a two-out walk-off single to give the White Sox a 3-2 triumph.

"I knew a strikeout wouldn't help us there, and if you can just get the bat on the ball and get something through the infield, game over," Phegley said.

Adam Dunn blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, his 29th of the season, to tie the game up.

Chicago starter Hector Santiago pitched well in the no-decision, striking out six in 6 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs. Nate Jones (4-4) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and was awarded the win.

The Rangers had a four-game winning streak snapped and wasted another outstanding performance from Yu Darvish, who surrendered two earned runs in seven innings while striking out 11 for his 10th double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Tanner Scheppers (5-2) was handed the loss.

Former White Sox outfielder Alex Rios gave the Rangers the lead in the sixth with a two-run homer, his 13th of the season and his first as a Ranger.

Texas is still the frontrunner in the AL West and leads the Athletics by 2 1/2 games.

The Rangers will send Matt Garza to the hill on Sunday afternoon. Garza, who came over in a trade with the Cubs in mid-July, is 3-1 with a 4.32 ERA with his new team and 9-2 with a 3.59 ERA overall.

Garza has been shaky over the past few weeks, allowing four earned runs or more in four consecutive starts. On Aug. 19, he allowed eight hits and five earned runs over 6 2/3 innings, but he managed to strike out eight and earned the win as the Rangers blew out the Astros, 16-5.

The 29-year-old right-hander faced off against the White Sox on July 8 as a member of the cross-town rival Cubs, and he allowed just one earned run over seven innings to earn the win.

The White Sox will counter with John Danks, who's in the midst of a disappointing 3-10 campaign, although his respectable ERA (4.22) and WHIP (1.17) do not warrant such a poor record.

Danks put his struggles behind him on Aug. 20 and pieced together his best performance of the year, pitching eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Royals. It was his first victory since July 2.

"You can look at each game and pick out an at-bat or a certain pitch where I didn't do myself any favors," Danks said. "Fortunately, I was able to stay away from that today. I felt like I was giving myself the best chance to win tonight."

Afternoon games have not been kind to Danks this season, as he's just 1-4 with a 4.95 ERA during the day.

The White Sox won two out of three when these teams met in Texas from April 30-May 2.
