Halladay enjoys successful return; Phils take series from Arizona
Aug 25, 2013 - 11:44 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay returned to action for the first time in three months and he helped the Philadelphia Phillies take a 9-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks to wrap up a three-game set.Halladay (3-4) last pitched on May 5 and has been out since having right shoulder surgery on May 16. He was expected to pitch another rehab assignment on Sunday, but was pressed into action on Sunday after scheduled starter Tyler Cloyd was used in a relief role in Saturday's 18-inning loss.
The righty had struggled in his first seven starts of the season prior to the surgery, going 2-4 with an 8.65 earned run average, but he gave up just two runs on four hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts over six innings to earn his first win since April 19.
John Mayberry hit a two-run home run while Roger Bernadina and Cody Asche each drove in a pair of runs for the Phillies, who have won six of their past eight games.
A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped four of their last five games. Patrick Corbin (13-4) was tagged for all nine runs -- eight earned -- on seven hits in just 5 1/3 innings.
"He didn't have his best stuff out there today," said Diamondback manager Kirk Gibson about Corbin. "He was hanging pitches up there and getting behind in the count. They were able to take advantage of that today."
As mentioned, Saturday's game went 18 innings and both teams set records for longest game time as the D-Backs needed seven hours and six minutes. to take a 12-7 decision thanks to a five-run final frame.
Arizona got to Halladay early as Tony Campana hit a triple to start the game and scored when Adam Eaton followed with a groundout, but Philadelphia gave Halladay some help in the home first.
"Sometimes I know for certain guys it can be better to give up a quick run and get it out of the way," said Halladay. "That's how it felt today, I just didn't think about it the rest of the way.
With the bases loaded and one out, Darin Ruf singled in a run and Asche followed with a two-run double. Kevin Frandsen then grounded out to plate another run for a 4-1 game.
The Diamondbacks cut their deficit to two in the second on a Tuffy Gosewisch sacrifice fly.
Bernadina kept it a two-run game in the third as he reached over the center field wall to snag a Matt Davidson shot that would have been a two-run home run.
Mayberry made it a 6-2 game in the fourth with his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left which followed an infield hit from Kevin Frandsen.
An RBI single from pinch-hitter Chase Utley and two-run double by Bernadina in the sixth inning gave Philly a 9-2 advantage.
Pollock's three-run home run off J.C. Ramirez in the eighth inning cut Arizona's deficit to 9-5.
Jake Diekman set the visitors down in order in the ninth to finish off the win.
