Granderson helps Yankees get by Rays in 11
Aug 26, 2013 - 3:13 AM St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson knocked in the go- ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning, as the New York Yankees salvaged the finale of a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 3-2 triumph Sunday at Tropicana Field.Alfonso Soriano got things started with a one-out double into the left-field corner and alertly swiped third before Granderson lifted a ball deep to center field, scoring Soriano easily from third for a one-run lead.
Mariano Rivera retired the Rays in order in the home half to secure his 38th save of the season and make a winner out of Boone Logan (4-2), who got pinch- hitter Jose Lobaton to ground into a double play to end the bottom of the 10th.
"We got a lot of big performances out of a lot of people today," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "That's a great team win."
Robinson Cano finished a triple shy of the cycle and knocked in two runs to help the Yankees avoid being swept by the Rays for the first time since Apr. 6-8, 2012.
Evan Longoria stroked a solo homer and plated both runs for the Rays, who had won five of their last six coming into the contest.
Jamey Wright (2-2) served up Granderson's sac fly in the 11th to absorb the loss.
The Rays jumped on New York starter Ivan Nova in the first, as David DeJesus laced a leadoff single and Ben Zobrist worked a walk before Longoria ripped a base hit through the left side of the infield to score DeJesus for a 1-0 lead.
After Matt Joyce grounded into a fielder's choice, Nova walked Wil Myers to load the bases, but escaped further damage by getting James Loney to ground into an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play.
"If we had gotten a couple more runs out of that inning it could have been a different game," said Rays manager Joe Maddon.
Cano smacked a one-out blast into the first row in left to get the Yankees on the board in the fourth and then put his squad in front in the sixth when he followed Ichiro Suzuki's leadoff single with a double into the gap in right- center field to plate Suzuki for a 2-1 lead.
Longoria pulled the Rays even in the home half, launching a one-out blast into the left-field seats to make it 2-2.
Neither team moved a runner into scoring position after the sixth until Alex Rodriguez led off the 10th with a pinch-hit single and moved to second on Brett Gardner's sacrifice bunt.
However, Suzuki followed with a liner back to the mound that Wright snagged before tossing to second to double off Rodriguez and end the inning.
