Erlin pitches Padres past D-backs
Aug 29, 2013 - 4:54 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Robbie Erlin sparkled in his return from the minors by pitching six solid innings and the San Diego Padres got home runs from Will Venable and Jesus Guzman in a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Erlin (2-2), who was recalled from Triple-A Tucson and made his fifth major league start, allowed six hits and a run to help the Padres avoid a three-game sweep. The left-hander was taking the spot of the recently released Edinson Volquez.
"I thought his hand speed, his arm speed was as good as I've seen it. His fastball had some life," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Robbie was able to carry his fastball all night long. He threw 30 pitches in the sixth inning and I thought that was enough. He was throwing the ball great."
Guzman had three hits and Venable knocked in three runs, as the Padres bounced back from a heart-breaking 10-9 loss in 10 innings Tuesday night.
Wade Miley (9-9) allowed seven hits and a pair of runs over seven innings.
Willie Bloomquist, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, went 3-for-4 and drove in the only run for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona remained six games behind Cincinnati for the second wild card spot.
Chris Denorfia singled to start the game and Venable followed with an RBI double to center. With two outs, Guzman singled to right field to drive in a run.
San Diego nearly scored a third run in the first. Logan Forsythe singled to center, but A.J. Pollock threw a perfect strike to catcher Wil Nieves and Guzman was out at home.
Bloomquist's singled in Eric Chavez in the sixth, and Arizona threatened in the seventh. With runners on first and second with one out, Tim Stauffer retired Adam Eaton and Martin Prado to keep the Padres in front.
Venable homered to right with Denorfia aboard in the eighth. Guzman went deep to left-center later in the frame, also off Heath Bell.
"He threw a pitch down and in to Venable. They're hacking. They swing early in the count," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Bell.
