Reds turn to Arroyo versus Rockies

Aug 30, 2013 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - Streaking right-hander Bronson Arroyo goes for a fifth consecutive win in his August finale on Friday night, when the Cincinnati Reds visit Coors Field to open a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies.

A 36-year-old, Arroyo was 9-9 on the season after his August debut ended in a 13-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals as he was hammered for seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

He's bounced back forcefully since, going at least seven innings in three of four starts while combining to allow seven runs on 20 hits in 27 innings of work while defeating San Diego. the Chicago Cubs, Arizona and Milwaukee.

He is 4-3 in 13 career meetings with the Rockies, but just 4-6 in 10 road starts this season with a 3.76 earned run average.

Arroyo's 13 wins mark the sixth time he's reached that number in a big league career that began in 2000 with Pittsburgh.

For Colorado, righty Jeff Manship starts for the fifth time this season while again looking for his first win since 2010.

The 28-year-old was 1-1 with Minnesota in 2009 and 2-1 in 2010 before going winless across 17 combined appearances the next two seasons. He was signed as a free agent by the Rockies in November and has dropped decisions in each of four starts in 2013.

He allowed two runs in five innings of his Rockies debut in New York on Aug. 8, then was touched for 11 runs and 14 hits across losing starts to San Diego and Philadelphia on Aug. 13 and 19.

He had a quality outing in a 3-0 loss at Miami on Aug. 24, giving up three runs while pitching six innings for the first time and striking out four batters.

The Rockies have been outscored in his four appearances, 17-10.

Manship has never faced the Reds.

On Wednesday in St. Louis, the Reds roughed up Adam Wainwright for a career- high nine runs over just two innings in their 10-0 triumph over the Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set.

Jay Bruce smacked a three-run homer and drove in five for the Reds, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the opening frame. Homer Bailey (9-10) fanned seven and gave up just five hits and two walks over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

"Usually, he's been our tough-luck guy, we haven't gotten him many runs," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

In Colorado, Jhoulys Chacin carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Rockies edged the San Francisco Giants, 5-4, in the rubber match of a three- game set.

Chacin (13-7) gave up just one hit, a Brandon Crawford blooper to center with two outs in the seventh inning, while striking out nine to finish August with a 4-2 mark.

"We were going to let him chase a no-hitter as long as it took," Rockies manager Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "After he gave up the hit I didn't want to let him go after that."

Wilin Rosario went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Yorvit Torrealba added a pair of RBI for the Rockies, winners in four of their last six games.

Rex Brothers spun a perfect ninth to notch his 14th save.

The Rockies entered the weekend with a slim 83-82 lead in the all-time series with the Reds, including two wins in three games when the teams met in Cincinnati in May.
