Lind, Blue Jays down Royals
Aug 31, 2013 - 6:02 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) -Adam Lind drove in two runs for the Toronto Blue Jays as they defeated the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, in the opener of a three- game set.Ryan Goins crossed the plate and brought in a run for the Blue Jays, who have won four of their last five games.
Mark Buehrle (11-7) won his sixth straight decision. The left-hander only surrendered four hits while striking out five batters in seven innings of work.
"One of his best things is his pace. He keeps the other off balance and gets us back in the dugout quickly. He makes the other team uncomfortable and gets us back out there to give us a chance to put up some runs," said Toronto third baseman Brett Lawrie.
Kansas City went with Ervin Santana (8-8), who also tossed seven innings. He gave up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Santana has not won a game since August 4.
"I made one bad pitch and left a fastball inside. Other than that it was good," said Santana.
Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, and Mike Moustakas each had two hits for the Royals, who had their five-game winning streak snapped by the Blue Jays.
Casey Janssen picked up his 25th save of the season. The closer allowed two base runners, but did not concede a run.
Goins got things going for Toronto in the bottom of the first when he reached first on a throwing error by second baseman Emilio Bonifacio. Edwin Encarnacion then reached second on a line drive that a diving Gordon could not come up with and Lind plated the two baserunners with a single up the middle.
Anthony Gose led off the fifth with a line drive triple to deep center and was brought home on a hard infield single from Goins.
The Royals tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Alcides Escobar outran reliever Brett Cecil in a race to first for an infield single and moved up a base on a Gordon single. Escobar then crossed home plate on a sacrifice bunt from Bonifacio. Hosmer drove in Gordon with a sharp line drive to left.
