Corbin aims to get on track for D'backs vs. Giants
Sep 1, 2013 - 2:17 PM (Sports Network) - With the Arizona Diamondbacks needing to make up ground in the race for a playoff spot, Patrick Corbin hopes to rebound from his worst outing of the season on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game set with the San Francisco Giants.Corbin, who won his first nine decisions of the campaign, is 13-4 with a 2.79 earned run average in 26 starts this season, but has won just once over his last six starts.
The lefty gave up a season-high eight earned runs over 5 1/3 innings of a 9-5 loss at Philadelphia on Sunday, tagged for seven hits and three walks.
"He didn't have his best stuff out there today," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson about Corbin. "He was hanging pitches up there and getting behind in the count. They were able to take advantage of that today."
The 23-year-old Corbin, who got extra rest ahead of this start thanks to an off day and a rotation juggle because of last weekend's 18-inning game versus the Phillies, is 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA in six lifetime meetings with the Giants.
The Diamondbacks picked up a 4-3 victory over the Giants on Saturday to remain six games back of Cincinnati for the league's second wild card spot.
Eric Chavez hit a run-scoring single off Sandy Rosario in the ninth, giving Arizona its 12th walk-off win of the season but just its fourth victory overall in the past 10 games.
Chavez's heroics came after Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked.
"I think it was fastball away," said Chavez. "I have never faced the guy before, just looking for a strike. You want to get a hit every time, you have to walk him (Goldschmidt) there."
The Giants failed to secure the victory after rallying from a 3-0 hole in the seventh inning. Gregor Blanco homered to begin the frame, while Marco Scutaro and Buster Posey added RBI hits.
San Francisco wrapped August 13-16 after winning just 18 games the previous two months.
Yusmeiro Petit gets the start for the Giants today, his third appearance and second start of the season. It comes against his former club as the righty went 9-19 with a 5.05 ERA in 56 games (35 starts) with Arizona from 2007-09.
He has faced the Diamondbacks once before, in relief.
Petit hurled 5 1/3 innings of relief on July 23 in his season debut, then beat Colorado in a start last Tuesday. The 28-year-old allowed two runs over six innings on six hits and three walks while striking out six.
"He pounded the strike zone with all of his pitches and threw quality strikes," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's been around, knows what he's doing out there. He showed it tonight."
The Giants have won nine of 14 versus the Diamondbacks this season, going 6-2 in Arizona.
