Puig, Dodgers edge Padres
Sep 1, 2013 - 11:47 PM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Yasiel Puig belted a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.Dale Thayer (2-5) hung a first-pitch slider that Puig skyed into the bleachers in left field to break a 1-1 tie. Puig's 14th home run coincidentally came on Cuban Heritage Day at Dodger Stadium.
Zack Greinke and Los Angeles' bullpen closed out the club's fourth straight victory, as Paco Rodriguez struck out Will Venable and got pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia on a groundout to strand a runner on third in the eighth.
Kenley Jansen hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to close out his 24th save and a sixth straight victory for Greinke.
"Zack gets you deep into the game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of his starter. "He got better as the game went on."
Greinke (14-3) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while fanning seven in as many innings, while his counterpart, Tyson Ross, struck out 10 over five frames.
"Our pitchers are giving us a chance to win. We're just one big hit away," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Both starters gave up a run in the third. Greinke walked a pair and gave up a two-out, run-scoring single to Alexi Amarista, and Mark Ellis countered with an RBI base hit in the bottom half, also with two away.
Amarista's hit was the first of his career.
Game Notes
Greinke also recorded his second stolen base of the year, the first Dodgers pitcher to do so since Orel Hershiser in 1987 ... Jansen has 100 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings this year ... The Dodgers have posted eight series sweeps since June 24 ... Los Angeles has won five straight against San Diego.
