Simmons' HR leads Braves past Mets
Sep 4, 2013 - 2:43 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Andrelton Simmons' two-run home run in the seventh inning lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 win over the New York Mets in the second of a three-game set.Evan Gattis, recalled before the game, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run for the Braves, who have taken eight of their last nine games.
Kris Medlen (12-12) gave up just one run on seven hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings to win his second straight start.
Eric Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Daniel Murphy drove in the lone run for the Mets, who have dropped three straight. Carlos Torres (3-3) gave up three runs on seven hits over seven innings to take the loss.
Torres had stymied the Braves' offense as he allowed just one runner to reach second base through the first six innings, but Atlanta got to him with the long ball in the seventh to surge ahead.
With one out, Gattis clubbed his 16th home run of the year to tie the game. Dan Uggla then drew a walk and Simmons launched a pitch over the left-center wall for a 3-1 lead.
"The pitches we're getting by them early," said Torres. "I felt like I had good location with my pitches, but I need to be able to get it in more. Baseball usually comes down to one or two pitches, one or two at-bats. That's the way it goes."
Scott Downs walked Young to start the eighth then stepped aside after retiring Murphy. Luis Ayala took the hill and Young stole second, then moved to third on a Josh Satin groundout. However, after walking Lucas Duda, Ayala got Travis d'Arnaud to pop out and end the inning.
Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth inning to convert his 34th straight save and 44th on the season.
"That's what we're about," said Simmons. "We always feel like we're in ball games. Especially in games that close."
The only other run in the game came in the sixth as Young tripled with one out and Murphy followed with a double to right.
