Flynn to make debut for Marlins in finale with Cubs

Sep 4, 2013 - 2:33 PM (Sports Network) - Towering southpaw Brian Flynn makes his Major League debut for the Miami Marlins when they visit Wrigley Field on Thursday afternoon for the finale of a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs.

A seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2011, Flynn was acquired by the Marlins last season as part of the deal that sent starter Anibal Sanchez to the American League.

The 6-foot-7, 239-pounder played with three teams at the Single-A and Double-A levels in 2012 and was a combined 11-5 with a 3.91 earned run average in 27 starts.

He's spent 2013 at Double-A and Triple-A while combining to win seven of 19 decisions, though he's maintained a 2.63 earned run average across 27 starts and 161 innings, walking 43 batters and striking out 147.

A spot on the 40-man roster was cleared when the Marlins designated Jordan Brown for assignment.

He's opposed by Chicago right-hander Jeff Samardzija, who's gone 2-0 in four starts since last losing at Philadelphia on Aug. 8.

Samardzija pitched a combined 17 innings in the two victories, allowing just three runs on 13 hits while defeating Washington, 11-1, and winning at San Diego, 3-2.

In 15 starts this season at Wrigley, he's 3-5 with a 4.70 ERA.

In 12 career meetings with the Marlins, Samardzija is 2-1 with a 4.62 ERA in 25 1/3 innings.

On Tuesday, Christian Yelich and Donovan Solano each drove in two and finished with three hits, as the Marlins nabbed a third straight win by defeating the Cubs, 6-2.

Giancarlo Stanton and Justin Ruggiano each plated a run as well and Miami's bullpen turned in 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief behind starter Tom Koehler to notch the team's first three-game win streak since July 31-Aug. 2.

Edwin Jackson (7-15) was tagged for three runs on seven hits over five frames to take the loss, his fourth in six starts.

The Marlins entered the week with a slim 82-81 lead in the all-time series between the teams, though the Cubs won three of four when they played in Miami from April 25-28.
