Orioles aim to get on track vs. White Sox

Sep 5, 2013 - 2:28 PM (Sports Network) - If the Baltimore Orioles intend on returning to the postseason they are going to need to start stringing some wins together. Perhaps a visit from the woeful Chicago White Sox will help.

The Orioles try to get themselves back into the win column on Thursday when they open a four-game set with the White Sox at Camden Yards.

Baltimore just completed a 3-6 road trip and has fallen four games off the pace in the American League Wild Card chase. By losing two of three to the Cleveland Indians the O's fell a half-game behind the Tribe, and are also looking up at the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the battle for the last AL playoff spot.

"We know everybody is trying to make the playoffs at this point," said Manny Machado, who homered in Wednesday's 6-4 loss. "But we're not in panic mode. I don't think we will be either."

Hoping to turn things around for the O's on Thursday will be righty Miguel Gonzalez, who is 8-7 with a 4.11 ERA. Gonzalez lost his fourth straight decision on Friday in New York, as the Yankees pounded him for seven runs and six hits in four innings.

"He pitched as well as you'd want, but couldn't get over the hump," Showalter said. "Miguel has pitched well this year and he'll get another chance."

Chicago, meanwhile, knows all about struggling on the road, as it enters this series 0-6 on its 10-game trip after losing three in a row to the New York Yankees.

The White Sox trailed 6-1 on Wednesday before scoring four times in the eighth inning to make things interesting. However, the great Mariano Rivera came on to get the final out in the eighth before shutting the door in the ninth to secure the Yankees' 6-5 win.

"That's one thing I say about our team is we do fight to the end," Paul Konerko said. "We've had a lot of games that looked just like that this year where we were down four, five runs and we fight back, we just can't finish it off."

Getting the call for the ChiSox on Thursday will be lefty Jose Quintana, who threw only 20 pitches on Monday before a lengthy rain delay at Yankee Stadium cut his day short. He is 7-5 on the year with a 3.69 ERA.

Chicago took two of three from the Orioles earlier in the season.
