Phils rely on Cloyd in opener with Padres

Sep 10, 2013 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Youngster Tyler Cloyd meets the San Diego Padres for the first time in his brief career on Tuesday night when they visit the Philadelphia Phillies for the first of three games at Citizens Bank Park.

An 18th-round draft choice of the Phillies in 2008, Cloyd initially reached the majors last season and was 2-2 in six starts while posting a 4.91 earned run average in 33 innings.

He's bounced between the majors and Triple-A this season, going 2-2 in six appearances through mid-June before another call-up in late August.

In two starts since returning, he's picked up a loss and a no-decision while allowing 10 hits and five runs in 11 innings against Colorado and Arizona.

The Phillies are 2-6 this season in games he's pitched.

For San Diego, another 2008 draft pick - first-rounder Andrew Cashner - makes his 24th start of the season.

The Texas-born righty was 8-5 in 2013 after a 7-2 defeat of the New York Yankees on Aug. 2, but has gone 0-3 in five starts since, though his ERA has dipped from 3.80 to 3.45.

He got a tough luck no-decision in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Aug. 31 after allowing a run on 10 hits in seven innings of a game the Padres lost, 2-1.

The start is his first against Philadelphia after six relief appearances in which he allowed one run in five innings.

On Sunday in San Diego, the Padres rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to complete a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 5-2 win.

With the bases loaded, Roy Oswalt (0-5) walked Jesus Guzman to force home Chase Headley. Nick Hundley followed with a pinch-hit, three-run double down the line in left to make it 5-2.

"In a close game, a well-pitched game, it sometimes comes down to a big hit," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Rene Rivera also drove in a run for the Padres, winners in five of their last six.

Nick Vincent (4-2) earned the win after tossing a scoreless seventh inning and Huston Street spun a perfect ninth to notch his 29th save of the season.

Padres starter Ian Kennedy gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits while striking out seven over five frames.

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Darin Ruf's eighth-inning solo home run helped the Phillies complete a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 3-2 victory.

With the score tied at 2-2, Ruf led off the home half of the eighth and sent a David Carpenter (3-1) offering over the fence in right on a 3-2 count to put the Phillies ahead. B.J. Rosenberg came on in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to record his first career save.

"It was a good sign for Darin to go right-center like that," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.

Cole Hamels (7-13) was stellar for the Phils, striking out nine in eight innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits, both solo home runs by Evan Gattis.

Ruf and Chase Utley had two hits apiece for the Phils, who swept their first series since they took four from the Miami Marlins in early June.

The Phillies won two of three games from the Padres when the teams played in Philadelphia in June.
