De La Rosa shoots for win No. 17 against Giants

Sep 10, 2013 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Jorge De La Rosa tries to set a new career high for victories in a season and become the first NL pitcher to reach 17 victories as he gets the call for the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants.

De La Rosa takes the mound for the second contest of this three-game set having won six straight starts while posting a 3.31 earned run average in that span. That has lifted his season record to 16-6, matching his career-best win total set in 2009, to go along with a 3.31 ERA in 29 starts.

The left-hander is tied with Washington's Jordan Zimmermann and Adam Wainwright of St. Louis for the NL lead in victories. Zimmermann is also in action on Tuesday.

De La Rosa extended his personal winning streak with a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings.

"They're good hitters, but after that I made adjustments and kept the ball down," De La Rosa said on the Rockies' website.

The 32-year-old can match a franchise record for consecutive winning starts that he set in 2009 from June 21-July 30. That seven-start win streak was matched by Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010.

De La Rosa is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts versus the Giants this year and 8-4 with a 3.60 ERA against them lifetime.

The Giants counter with Ryan Vogelsong, who is coming off his first loss since returning from a 69-game absence due to a fractured right hand suffered on May 20.

The righty is 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA in six starts since his return, but lost for the first time since May 15 with a setback to Arizona on Thursday. He gave up four runs -- all in the fifth inning -- over 4 2/3 frames of work.

"He just lost it and had trouble making a pitch," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy about Vogelsong. "He got the ball up and made some mistakes. He was doing great heading into that inning."

Vogelsong, 36, is 3-5 with a 5.62 ERA in 15 starts this season and owns career numbers of 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA versus the Rockies.

The Giants took the opener of this series in 10 innings on Monday as Brandon Belt singled home the winner in a 3-2 decision.

Belt finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and Buster Posey added a solo homer for the Giants, winners in three of their last four games. However, the defending World Series champions were officially eliminated from the race for the NL West crown despite the victory.

"We want to finish as strong as we can, no matter what situation we're in," said Belt. "I believe there's momentum we can gain that we can carry into next year."

Troy Tulowitzki and Yorvit Torrealba drove in one run apiece for the Rockies, who have dropped four straight.

"We've struggled to score on the road, that's been a trend here," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "It's something we're tying to solve. When you score two runs, like we done a handful of times on this trip, it's going to be tough to win games."

The Giants and Rockies split 16 meetings this season ahead of this series, with San Francisco winning five of six at home.
