Galvis guides Phillies past Padres
Sep 12, 2013 - 3:48 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Freddy Galvis went 3-for-3 and finished a triple shy of the cycle, Cliff Lee tossed eight solid innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres, 4-2, in the second test of a three-game series.Galvis ended with two RBI and two runs scored for the Phillies, who bounced back from an 8-2 loss in the series opener on Tuesday. Jimmy Rollins added a solo homer.
Lee (13-6) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out nine for Philadelphia, which has won four of five. The left-hander picked up his third straight victory.
"I think I have had a better change-up lately. When I get behind in counts I can throw that pitch in fastball counts," said Lee.
Tommy Medica hit his first career homer for the Padres, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Jedd Gyorko added a solo homer.
Eric Stults got the start for San Diego and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings. Nick Vincent (4-3) took the loss after allowing one run on one hit while walking two in the seventh inning.
Tonight, more than I have seen in the past, (Lee) pitched a lot of change-ups. Both guys really did. Stults had a good change working for him. Lee threw a lot change-ups, but was also working in the cutter and heater," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Medica's first hit in the big leagues came in the fifth inning. He smacked a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-center field. Galvis responded with a one-out homer to left in the bottom half.
Gyorko and Rollins kept the home run parade going in the sixth, with each player hitting a homer for their respective teams.
Philadelphia took the lead in the seventh. Galvis led off with a double down the left-field line, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and raced home when Cesar Hernandez grounded out.
The Phillies tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Brad Boxberger gave up a leadoff single to Carlos Ruiz before walking Darin Ruf. Cody Asche then grounded into a fielder's choice to put men on the corners and Galvis' sac bunt plated Ruiz, making it 4-2.
Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his 26th save of the season.
