Pelfrey, Twins resume set with White Sox

Sep 17, 2013 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - Righty Mike Pelfrey tries to snap his latest two-start skid on Tuesday night when the Minnesota Twins visit U.S. Cellular Field for the middle game of a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.

A former first-round pick of the New York Mets before heading to Minnesota as a free agent before this season, Pelfrey has struggled throughout and dropped his last two starts while allowing 14 hits and 13 runs in nine innings.

It's the fourth time he's lost at least two in a row in 2013, following a pair in April, three straight from May 15-31 and four in a row from July 11-Aug. 10.

Pelfrey has not won two decisions in a row at any point this year.

He last faced the White Sox in Aug. 15 in Minnesota and got a no-decision after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Five days earlier, he'd dropped a 5-4 verdict in Chicago after the White Sox compiled five runs in five innings.

For the White Sox, Colombian-born lefty Jose Quintana faces the Twins for the sixth time in his 53rd big league start.

The 24-year-old is 1-2 with a 7.52 ERA in the first five meetings, the most recent of which came Aug. 16, when he gave up two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 5-2 triumph.

Unfortunately, he's 0-2 in five outings since that victory, though he most recently pitched seven shutout innings against Detroit on Sept. 11 in a game the White Sox ultimately lost, 1-0.

Quintana is 4-4 in 15 home starts in 2013.

On Monday, the White Sox ended their scoring slump by batting around during a seven-run first inning, and went on to crush the Twins, 12-1, to end a six- game losing streak.

Chicago's first-inning outburst totaled the amount it scored over its most recent slide, with the team's 1-8 hitters each recording at least one hit, one run scored and one RBI in the victory.

Backed by plenty of support, Erik Johnson (1-2) cruised over six scoreless innings to pick up his first major league victory. He allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Minnesota won 10 of the first 16 games in 2013 with the White Sox, a year after Chicago won 14 of 18 in the season series.
