Bedard looks to continue hot pitching; Orioles Face Devil Rays

Jul 25, 2007 - 1:20 PM Tampa Bay (36-61) at Baltimore (45-53) 7:05 pm EDT

BALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Baltimore Orioles seem to have found an ace in Erik Bedard.

Bedard and the Orioles aim for their third straight win when they face the struggling Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday.

Daniel Cabrera gave up one hit over seven innings, lifting the Orioles to a 3-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. It was their seventh straight win over Tampa Bay.

Looking to continue their winning ways against the Devil Rays, the Orioles turn to Bedard (9-4, 3.12 ERA), who has won five of his last six decisions. In winning his last three starts, the lefthander has yielded only six hits over 23 innings while striking out 33 to increase his major league leading total to 167.

Bedard surrendered just a solo homer to Mark Ellis in seven innings in a 6-1 victory over Oakland last Friday.

The Devil Rays, who have lost four straight and 21 of 26, turn to Andy Sonnanstine (1-5, 5.37) to end their losing streak.

However, Sonnanstine has had his problems as well. The rookie righthander is 0-5 with a 5.44 ERA in seven starts since getting his first major league victory on June 10 vs. Florida. The 24-year-old allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings in a 3-0 los to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last Thursday.

The Devil Rays have lost 21 of their last 26 games.
