Beckett faces Carmona as Red Sox visit Indians
Jul 25, 2007 - 1:25 PM Boston (61-39) at Cleveland (58-42) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - One night after a marquee pitching matchup, the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians will be taking their hacks against another set of top-tier arms.
Josh Beckett and Fausto Carmona will square off on Wednesday when the Red Sox visit the Indians.
On Tuesday night, Daisuke Matsuzaka outdueled C.C. Sabathia as the Red Sox won their fifth straight game, 1-0.
With Sabathia failing to earn a win, Beckett (13-3, 3.41 ERA) has a chance to move into sole possession of the major league lead in wins with 14. The 27-year-old righthander has alternated wins and losses over his last five starts, going 3-2 with a 4.09 ERA.
He dominated the Indians on May 29, allowing two runs and three hits in seven innings to earn a victory. Last season, Cleveland pounded Beckett, scoring 16 runs over two starts.
Carmona (12-4, 3.52) has been a revelation for the Indians, providing a consistent arm in the rotation other than Sabathia. Carmona comes into Wednesday's start riding a four-start winning streak, compiling a 2.05 ERA.
The 23-year-old righthander made two appearance against Boston out of the bullpen last season, during an ill-fated attempt at becoming the closer. He allowed five runs in one total inning, including allowing a walk-off homer to All-Star slugger David Ortiz.
Ortiz is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday after taking the past four games off with a strained left shoulder.
