Mets down Phils in rain-shortened game
Sep 22, 2013 - 5:05 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - David Wright and Daniel Murphy both hit solo home runs as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, in a rain-shortened seven-inning game.David Wright crossed the plate twice and went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Mets, who have won three of their last four.
Dillon Gee (12-10) surrendered four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over six innings.
"For the most part I felt like I executed my pitches well," said Gee. "It was a rough six innings, but I got some good run support from the rest of the guys."
Jimmy Rollins, Cody Asche, and Carlos Ruiz each drove in a run for the Phillies, who have lost three consecutive games.
Phillies' starter Tyler Cloyd (2-6) was reached for five runs on six hits in five-plus innings.
"He seems to struggle sometimes seeing the lineup the second time," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He'll have another chance to pitch."
Philadelphia scored first in the second. Domonic Brown singled to right and moved to third on a single from Darin Ruf. Asche hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Brown hustled home to score. The throw reached Travis d'Arnaud behind the plate and it appeared that he tagged Brown's leg, but Brown was called safe after his hand swiped across home plate.
Wright lifted a home run into the right field seats to tie the game at one in the fourth. He has homered in his last three games.
Murphy led off the sixth with a home run out to right field. Wright squeezed a grounder into left for a single and Cloyd hitLucas Duda to put runners on first and second with no outs. Cesar Hernandez misjudged a Juan Lagares fly ball out in center, allowing Lagares to reach third safely while driving in Wright and Duda.
Cloyd was replaced with Ethan Martin, who struck out Matt den Dekker before d'Arnaud smacked a line drive off the right field wall to bring in Lagares for a 5-1 lead.
The Phillies doubled three times and brought in three runs in the sixth. Hernandez lined to center before Rollins drove him in with a fly ball that eluded a diving den Dekker in right-center. Chase Utley lifted a fly ball to the center field warning track to put runners at second and third. Ruiz grounded out, but brought in Rollins and Utley came home on a wild pitch to make it a 5-4 game.
After a rain delay of one hour and 28 minutes with one out in the top of the seventh, the umpires called the game.
Game Notes
Wright's 19 home runs are the most for a visiting player in Citizens Bank Park history ... Rollins extended his hitting streak to seven games, while Wright has hit in eight straight games.
