Olsen returns to mound as Marlins visit Diamondbacks

Jul 25, 2007 - 1:55 PM Florida (48-53) at Arizona (54-48) 9:40 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) - Scott Olsen will be trying to put a rough week behind him when he takes the mound Wednesday as the Florida Marlins visit the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Olsen was charged with driving under the influence on Saturday. Along with the DUI charge, the 23-year-old was nabbed for resisting arrest with violence and fleeing after eluding a police officer and refusing to pull over during a traffic stop.

But according to Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, the club is leaning toward letting the incident play out in court before punishing the young pitcher.

"We've kicked it around a long time," Gonzalez said in a statement on the team's web site. "The plan is for him to start Wednesday. We're going to let the legal process take its course, as of right now. It's not a decision - we're still talking about it. But the plan is still that he's going on Wednesday."

The organization also issued a statement on Saturday afternoon.

"The Florida Marlins are aware of the charges facing Scott Olsen," the statement read. "As an organization, we take this very seriously and are extremely disappointed. We will let the legal process run its course and will have no further comment."

It was not the first trouble for Olsen this season. The arrest came hours after Olsen made his return from a two-game, team-imposed suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

In June, Olsen made an obscene gesture to fans in Milwaukee after being removed from the game and was fined an undisclosed amount. And Last year, he was involved in an altercation with former Marlin Randy Messenger and received a black eye.

Olsen (8-7, 4.99 ERA), who threw his normal bullpen session at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, is coming off one of his best outings of the season. He worked seven strong innings Friday night against the Cincinnati Reds, improving to 8-7 with a 4.99 ERA on the campaign.

The Diamondbacks will counter with reigning Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb (8-8, 3.38). The sinkerballer has not notched a win in his last four starts, going 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA.

Arizona got a strong performance from Livan Hernandez on Tuesday night en route to a 9-3 victory - the team's fourth straight.
