White Sox put Tigers' celebration plans on hold
Sep 23, 2013 - 12:51 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Avisail Garcia and Jeff Keppinger each registered three hits and two RBI to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a three-game set from Comerica Park.Conor Gillaspie also drove in a pair of runs for Chicago while scoring three times, a career high. Rookie Erik Johnson (2-2) gave up just two runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings against the dangerous Tigers' lineup to earn the win.
"Each start I take, I try to build off the last one," Johnson said. "Each time I'm out there learning something new, learning about the game."
Prince Fielder homered for Detroit, which saw its four-game winning streak over Chicago come to an end. The Tigers' magic number to clinch the American League Central remains at two.
"We have to go out and win a couple games. It's that simple," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "There's no secret to what we have to do."
Anibal Sanchez (14-8) was tagged for four runs on eight hits in five innings of work to absorb the loss.
The Sox plated a run in the top of the first when Garcia singled to center with two outs, scoring Gillaspie. The latter had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch during Garcia's at- bat.
Johnson kept Detroit off the board until the fourth, when Fielder took the first pitch he saw deep to right field for his 25th blast of the season.
Gillaspie tripled in a pair of runs with one away in the fifth inning and scored one batter later on another Garcia RBI single.
Chicago, after blowing a 6-0 advantage in the ninth inning on Saturday night, needed all the insurance runs it could get, and tacked on two more in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead. With the bases loaded and one away, Keppinger stepped up and doubled to deep right, plating Gillaspie and Garcia for a 6-1 lead.
The Tigers got two runs back late on Austin Jackson's seventh-inning sac fly and Ramon Santiago's RBI groundout in the ninth.
Game Notes
Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera left Saturday's game with a sore groin and was kept out of the lineup as a precaution. Don Kelly started in his place and went 0-for-3 ... Gillaspie tripled twice in this series ... The Tigers will look to lock up the division crown when they travel to Minnesota for a three-game set beginning Monday.
