Eovaldi, Marlins shut out Phillies
Sep 24, 2013 - 5:28 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Nathan Eovaldi spun 7 2/3 stellar frames of three-hit ball to help the Miami Marlins shut out the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 in the opener of a three-game set.Eovaldi (4-6) fanned five and issued a pair of walks over his solid outing. Christian Yelich went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Marlins, who have won two of their last three games.
"Early in the game, I was trying to get ahead," said Eovaldi. "Toward the fifth, sixth innings I was falling behind, but like I said I was able to make big pitches with my fastball."
Phillies starter Roy Halladay (4-5) only pitched to three batters. The veteran right-hander left the game due to right arm fatigue. He issued two walks and was charged with a run to absorb the loss.
"I'm fatigued, really the last few starts I just haven't been getting that bounce back in between," said Halladay. "I have zero pain, which is good."
Jimmy Rollins doubled in the sixth to provide the only extra-base hit for the Phillies, who have lost five straight.
Halladay found the strike zone on just five of his 16 pitches before giving way to Luis Garcia, who issued back-to-back walks, with the second plating Donovan Solano for the game's first run.
The Phillies' bullpen did not allow a run until the eighth. Placido Polanco led off with a double to right. After getting Adeiny Hechavarria to fly out, B.J. Rosenberg issued consecutive walks to Jeff Mathis and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs to load the bases.
Solano singled up the middle to plate Polanco before Ed Lucas laced a line- drive base hit to right to score Mathis. Cesar Jimenez took over on the mound for the Phillies and served up a sacrifice fly to Yelich to make it 4-0.
Game Notes
The Phillies placed pitcher Kyle Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with right shoulder tendinitis ... Rollins extended his hitting streak to nine games, while Solano reached seven games ... Miami went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
