Phillies, Marlins square off again in Miami
Sep 24, 2013 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Zach Miner makes his second start in a Philadelphia uniform on Tuesday night, when the Phillies play game two of a three-game series at Marlins Park.A veteran of 157 big-league outings before this season, Miner had been out of the majors since 2009 before arriving in Philadelphia this season and making 13 relief appearances through Sept. 13.
He was called into starting duty on Sept. 18 against the Marlins to fill in for an injured Kyle Kendrick and pitched three scoreless innings in a game the Phillies ultimately lost, 4-3.
Kendrick has since been shut down for the season, meaning Miner will get another assignment against Miami - whom he'd never faced before last week's assignment.
The 31-year-old Missouri native walked two batters and struck out two in that game, while lowering his 2013 earned run average to 3.22.
For the Marlins, 23-year-old Henderson Alvarez aims for a second win in three starts.
The right-hander allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings of a 3-0 defeat of the New York Mets on Sept. 14, when he walked no one and struck out five batters.
In one subsequent start, he allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings of a 3-2 loss at Washington on Sept. 19.
Alvarez has never faced the Phillies.
On Monday, Nathan Eovaldi spun 7 2/3 stellar frames of three-hit ball to help the Marlins shut out the Phillies, 4-0.
Eovaldi (4-6) fanned five and issued a pair of walks over his solid outing.
Christian Yelich went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Marlins, who have won two of their last three games.
Phillies starter Roy Halladay (4-5) only pitched to three batters. The veteran right-hander left the game due to right arm fatigue. He issued two walks and was charged with a run to absorb the loss. Jimmy Rollins doubled in the sixth to provide the only extra-base hit for the Phillies, who have lost five straight.
The Phillies won 11 of their first 16 games this season with the Marlins, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 10-8.
