Miller's grand slam helps Mariners down A's
Sep 29, 2013 - 4:37 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brad Miller hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning, to help the Seattle Mariners to a 7-5 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.Justin Smoak hit a two-run home run for the Mariners, who have won three of their last four games. Brandon Maurer (5-8) gave up two runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
"I'm so happy for him because he's been great in his last three outings," said Seattle manager Eric Wedge about Maurer. "He's been really consistent and making strides in his composure and handling emotions."
The loss by Oakland means the team will finish with the second seed in the American League as Boston clinched the top spot with the Athletics' loss. Oakland will face Detroit when its series gets underway.
"We know how deep they are and how talented they are," said Oakland first baseman Brandon Moss. "It's one of the tougher matchups you can draw, but if you win you can be better prepared for the next series."
Moss hit a two-run home run while Alberto Callaspo smacked a solo shot and drove in two for the Athletics, who saw starter Jarrod Parker (12-8) give up seven runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Seattle took the lead in the second inning as Raul Ibanez walked with one out and Smoak followed with his 20th homer of the season for a 2-0 lead.
The A's got one back in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Coco Crisp, but Miller's seventh of the season in the home half made it a 3-1 game.
In the fifth, Dustin Ackley, Mike Zunino and Nick Franklin all singled to load the bases for Miller, who knocked a pitch out of the park for a grand slam and a 7-1 lead.
Callaspo's RBI single in the sixth and Moss' two-run homer followed by a solo shot from Callaspo in the seventh made it a 7-5 game.
Oakland loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Yoervis Medina struck out Jed Lowrie to end the frame.
Danny Farquhar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 16th save of the season.
Game Notes
Moss' home run was his 30th of the season and he is the first Athletic to reach 30 since Jack Cust hit 33 in 2008 ... Oakland went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base ... Seattle has won 11 of the 18 games with Oakland this season.
