Cubs aim for three-game sweep of Cardinals
Jul 26, 2007 - 1:45 PM Chicago Cubs (53-46) at St Louis (45-52) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs will look to complete a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
Ted Lilly matched a career best by winning his sixth straight start and Cliff Floyd and Mike Fontenot each drove in two runs in Chicago's 7-1 win on Wednesday.
The Cubs hand the ball to Jason Marquis (7-5, 3.92 ERA), who returns to Busch Stadium for the second time to face his former club. On April 27, Marquis gave up three runs and five in 6 2/3 innings to beat the Cardinals 5-3 and improved to 3-0 all-time in the series.
The 28-year-old righthander had spent his three pervious seasons with St. Louis before signing in the offseason with Chicago, which is only two games behind Milwaukee for first place in the National League Central.
St. Louis counters with Braden Looper (7-8, 5.09), who was hammered for seven runs and 10 hits in just 2 2/3 frames of a 14-6 setback at Atlanta. He is only 2-6 in his last 10 starts.
