Uribe delivers to keep White Sox rolling

CHICAGO (Ticker) - The Chicago White Sox continue to show signs of life.

Juan Uribe drove in the go-ahead run and Jermaine Dye homered as the White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays at U.S. Cellular Field, 4-3, on Friday.

The White Sox have won four of their last five games, after taking three out of five from the American Central Division-leading Detroit Tigers.

"Hopefully, this is the beginning of a better summer for us," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Hopefully, (Dye) will continue to swing the bat well for us."

In the decisive sixth, A.J. Pierzynski was hit by a pitch before rookie Josh Fields singled with one out, ending the night for Blue Jays starter Josh Towers (5-7). Two batters later, Uribe doubled against Brian Tallet to score Pierzynski and Fields to put the Sox up 4-3.

"Uribe's an aggressive hitter," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "(Towers) threw it right down broadway (to Uribe in the sixth inning). It was a game we should've won."

"I felt like I was in control and pitching well," Towers said. "(But) I don't think we showed up today. We just gave the game away. I don't think there were heads up, and I don't think we consistently show up as a coaching staff and a team everyday."

Towers yielded four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Dye is hitting .317 (19-for-60) with six doubles, six home runs and 11 RBI since the All-Star break. Prior to that, Dye had gone .040 (1-for-25) in his final seven games of the first half. He hit his 18th home run of the year in the second inning to put Chicago on the board first.

"I'm just going out, having fun, and playing the game," Dye said. "I had a tough first half. In the second half, I just wanted to go out there and clear everything out of my mind and focus."

White Sox righthander Jon Garland pitched 7 1/3 effective innings to end Toronto 's season-high five-game winning streak. The Blue Jays are now 20-31 on the road, having lost seven of their last 11 contests away from Rogers Centre.

Garland (8-7) gave up three runs on 10 hits in his 22nd start of the season. Rookie Ehren Wasserman finished the eighth and Bobby Jenks logged the ninth for his 29th save.

"I got lucky tonight," Garland said. "I missed way too many pitches. (But) I was attacking the zone a lot better than I have in the past."

In the fourth inning, Toronto's Frank Thomas hit a routine fly ball to left field that was misjudged by Podsednik. The ball dropped for an RBI double to tie the score at 1-1. Aaron Hill continued the fourth by hitting a single to score Thomas, before Matt Stairs' RBI single capped off the three-run frame.

Thomas, who played for Chicago from 1990-2005 and holds franchise records in most offensive categories, finished the night with a double and a run scored.

"(Thomas) is a class act," Guillen said. "He was one of the best players to wear a Sox uniform."

Reed Johnson went 4-for-4 for Toronto, matching a career high.
