Bonds looks to make history vs. Marlins

Jul 28, 2007 - 2:48 PM Florida (48-56) at San Francisco (44-57) 9:05 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Barry Bonds is just one homer away from joining Hall of Famer Hank Aaron atop the record books.

Bonds will try to collect his 755th career blast when the San Francisco Giants meet the Florida Marlins in the second game of a weekend series on Saturday.

The 43-year-old slugger inched closer to trying Aaron's all-time mark when he smacked on a 2-1 pitch to deep left-center field in Friday's 12-10 series opening win. He finished 1-for-1 with four walks.

"It felt good, real good, but a win felt better. It's sinking in now. The city is great, the fans have been fantastic," Bonds said. "I don't know how to say thank you enough for them and the city of San Francisco, not only for myself, but for the organization. It's very hard to explain because I can't tell you every emotion that's going through my body and everything that's going on."

It was the first homer at AT&T Park for the seven-time National League MVP since going deep in the fifth inning of a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 29.

Florida's Dontrelle Willis (7-10, 5.15 ERA) will try not to be linked to Bonds' historical chase. Willis goes in search of his first win since May 29 - a span of nearly two months.

Last time out, the 25-year-old lefthander gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings in Monday's 4-3 setback at the hands of Arizona.

The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (3-12, 4.02), who has dropped his last three starts. Most recently, the righthander allowed four runs and six hits in 4 1/3 frames of a 4-2 setback.
