Swisher, Athletics hope to stop slide against Tigers' rookie

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics will look to put an end to their three-game losing streak when they host the Detroit Tigers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

Athletics first baseman Nick Swisher is hoping to continue swing a hot bat. The 26-year-old switch-hitter has driven in nine runs over his previous five games.

He has a good chance because the Tigers will start rookie Jordan Tata (0-0, 6.14), who is making his first career start.

The Athletics will counter with Joe Blanton (8-7, 3.69), who is winless in his last four starts. The 26-year-old righthander is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA and just nine strikeouts over that span.

Detroit also is struggling, losing its last four contests but still holds a slim one-half game lead Cleveland in the American League Central.
