Streaking Angels seek franchise record

Jul 30, 2007 - 3:04 PM LA Angels (61-42) at Seattle (57-46) 10:05 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim look to continue their offensive surge when they visit the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

It was quite a weekend for the Angels, who reached double-digits in runs in three straight games in sweeping the Detroit Tigers. The Angels scored a total of 34 runs.

Anaheim should be happy at the sight of Seattle. The Angels have averaged 5.9 runs in going 7-2 against the Mariners this season.

Thanks to their success against the Mariners, the Angels hold a four-game lead over them in the American League West Division.

Anaheim sends Kelvim Escobar (11-4, 2.91 ERA) to the mound. The righthander has won five of his last six decisions.

The one loss over his last six decisions came on Tuesday when Escobar yielded three runs and nine hits over seven frames in a 4-3 loss vs. Oakland. Nevertheless, he has as many wins this season through 19 starts as he did in 30 outings all of last season.

Escobar is 5-8 with a 5.05 ERA lifetime against Seattle.

Seattle will respond with fellow 10-game winner Miguel Batista (10-7, 4.48), who looks to win his third straight decision. He has not particularly enjoyed facing Anaheim over his career as he is 3-3 with a 6.75 ERA in five lifetime starts and five relief appearances against the Angels.

To get his fourth win in five starts, Batista will aim to avoid another outing like the one he had on Wednesday, a six-inning no-decision in which he surrendered five runs and eight hits in a 7-6 loss at Texas.

After a season-high seven-game losing streak, the Mariners won the final three contests over the weekend from Oakland.
