Mariners take aim at AL West-leading Angels

Jul 31, 2007 - 2:13 PM LA Angels (61-43) at Seattle (58-46) 10:05 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners will attempt to cut into the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's lead in the American League West when they host their division rivals on Tuesday.

The Mariners have been one of the surprise teams in the AL this season, winning with a strong bullpen and a group of opportunistic hitters. After a win in the series' opener on Monday, they sit just three games back of the Angels in the division.

Prior to Monday's 2-0 setback, Anaheim looked to be back on track offensively, overcoming a 3-8 stretch by scoring double-digit runs in three straight games for just the second time in franchise history en route to a sweep of AL Central-leading Detroit over the weekend.

Embattled starter Jeff Weaver (2-9, 5.96 ERA) will try to hand the Angels a second straight shutout loss. The veteran righthander is just 2-3 in nine starts since coming off the disabled list on June 9 despite a strong 2.79 ERA.

Weaver managed a 3-10 record with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts last season with Anaheim before being designated for assignment and shipped to the St. Louis Cardinals in July.

The Angels will counter with ace John Lackey (12-6, 3.27). The righthander got knocked around in his last start, allowing seven runs - five earned - and 10 hits in five innings at Minnesota to suffer a loss.
