Hot-hitting Devil Rays go for third straight win
Jul 31, 2007 - 2:24 PM Toronto (52-53) at Tampa Bay (40-65) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will look to bash their way to another victory when they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
The Devil Rays rank third in the American League in home runs this season, and lately B.J. Upton and Jonny Gomes have been leading the charge. Upton homered for the second straight game and Gomes clubbed his third blast in three games in Tampa Bay's 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Blue Jays on Monday.
Even speedster Carl Crawford, who pinch ran for Gomes in Monday's game, ended up providing the winning shot with a walk-off homer in the 11th inning.
Rookie Jesse Litsch (3-4, 4.01 ERA) will try to keep those bats quiet for Toronto. The 22-year-old righthander tends to keep the baseball inside the park, allowing only five home runs in eight starts this season and just one in his last four outings.
Tampa Bay will counter with Edwin Jackson (2-10, 7.00). The 23-year-old righthander has sandwiched one great start around a pair of rough outings over the past two weeks, allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings last Thursday at Baltimore to absorb the loss.
The Devil Rays, who own a bullpen ERA above 6.60 - by far the worst in the league - got 4 1/3 scoreless innings out of five relievers on Monday.
