Arroyo, Lannan face off as Reds visit Nationals

Aug 1, 2007 - 1:35 PM Cincinnati (45-62) at Washington (46-60) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Cincinnati Reds hung onto their sluggers at the trade deadline on Tuesday, but it did not help them win the first game of their series against the Washington Nationals. They will try to take the second game on Wednesday.

Rumors abounded for weeks prior to Tuesday's trade deadline that the Reds were attempting to unload sluggers Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr., but the team stayed quiet on the trade front, and both players were in the lineup and hit a combined 1-for-9 in Tuesday's 6-3 loss.

The Nationals managed to stay out of the headlines on Tuesday as well, hanging onto reliever Chad Cordero.

Washington will send rookie John Lannan (0-0, 8.31 ERA) to the mound for his second major league start. The 22-year-old lefthander did not factor in the decision last Thursday at Philadelphia, but he certainly made his presence felt.

Lannan was ejected from the game in the fifth after hitting Chase Utley on the hand - causing a break and a subsequent trip to the disabled list - and following that up by plunking Ryan Howard.

The Reds will counter with Bronson Arroyo (4-11, 4.33). The righthander turned in a strong performance on Friday against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs - both unearned - in 7 2/3 innings, but did not factor in the decision.
